The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a government initiative designed to improve access to affordable dental care for eligible Canadians who lack private dental insurance. It aims to address the financial barriers that prevent many from receiving essential dental treatments, thus promoting better overall health and well-being.
The CDCP provides publicly funded dental benefits to eligible Canadians. To qualify, applicants must have a household income under $90,000 per year and no private dental insurance. The program helps cover part of the costs for a wide range of dental treatments—from routine check-ups and cleanings to fillings, x-rays, fillings, extractions, root canals, and other oral health issues. By making dental care more affordable, the CDCP aims to ensure more Canadians can get the dental care they need for better overall health.
To apply for the CDCP, eligible individuals need to complete an application through the official government website. You’ll need to provide information about your household income and confirm that you don’t have private dental insurance. Once approved, you’ll receive details about your coverage and how to use your benefits. Our dental office is happy to help guide you through the process and answer any questions you may have.
Anyone wishing to participate in this plan must meet the eligibility requirements outlined below.
The CDCP uses its own fee guide to determine how much it will cover for the dental services included in the plan and these fees differ from the fee-guide used in Ontario. While the CDCP helps with costs, patients will not receive full financial coverage because co-payments are required due to differing fee-guides used. It’s important to ask about any expenses that the plan doesn’t cover. Co-payments are the portion of the treatment costs you’ll need to pay yourself, and the amount depends on your family’s net annual income from the previous year’s tax return. Any co-payments or fees not covered by the plan are paid directly to the dental office. For example, if a dentist follows the provincial fee guide and charges $100 for a cleaning but the CDCP fee structure only covers $90, the patient is responsible for the $10 difference.
